Middle East: PNA, Israel threatens to freeze relations

24 November , 14:34

(ANSAmed) - TEL AVIV, NOVEMBER 24 NOV - Israel is extremely interested in how the cross-Palestinian reconciliation meeting currently taking place in Cairo between Abu Mazen and Khaled Meshaal will develop. Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman stated that if the PNA does not succeed in convincing Hamas political leader to accept the Quartet's conditions (especially recognition of Israel's right to existence), the Israel's government will suspend all relations with PNA. "If the Palestininas create a single government with Hamas and al-Fatah in it and this government does not accept the Quartet's conbditions clearly and unmistakably , then Israel-Lieberman warned- will not recognize it, will not have any dialogue with it, will not allocate not even a shekel to it". In addition to Israel's recognition, the Quarter (USA, EU, Russia and UN) wants the Palestinian to recognize past commitments made at the international level and to clearly reject terrorism. In the meanwhile, nationalist daily newspaper Makor Rishon reports that Israel is trying to identify local Palestinian leaders in the West Bank in order to remedy a possible void in leadership if relations with Abu Mazen are suspended. One of them, the newspaper reported, might be sheikh Abu Khader al-Jaabri from Hebron, who took part in a secret meeting three months ago in Tel Aviv with Minister of Transport che Israel Katz (Likud) and former minister Rafel Eitan, a former Mossad director. According to the newspaper, al-Jaabri, is not interested in an independent Palestinian state: he rather hopes that autonomy agreements are made in order to ensure financial stability (ANSAmed).
