(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, SEPTEMBER 3 - The El Haouaria caves, on
the Cap Bon peninsula, have been classed as a cultural site.
Dating back to the seventh century BC, the caves provided the
sandstone used for the construction of monuments in Carthage,
which was Punic at first, and later Roman.
The cultural site, which is the result of a joint initiative
from the Tunisian Ministries of Culture and of Heritage
Protection, has been the subject of a series of restoration and
development works, which also include the surrounding
archaeological area. (ANSAmed).
